Emerging Media
With the development of new media and the convergence of existing technologies, society once again promises itself a fundamental change in media use & experience. With that promise, every innovation is being promoted as a step closer to the ‘perfect communication’ and, thereby, a better living standard. But the actual development of  media is hardly a representation of that common goal: rather it is a product of a dynamic interplay of stakeholders with different (short term) interests that are driven by political, economic, technical and sociocultural factors. It is this interplay where media are being shaped and reshaped, adopted, rejected and changed, and which, thus, offers a fertile ground for research on emerging media.

The introduction of HDTV

My current research focuses on the factors that play a role in the development and diffusion of High Definition  Television (HDTV) in de Netherlands. By looking at the constant interplay of the institutional HDTV development, discourse and factors driving user adoption, the research contributes to an understanding of the way HDTV – and media technology in a broader sense- emerges in Dutch society.
